Here is the trailer to a new documentary,Meet the Fokkens, about identical twin sisters Louise and Martine Fokkens working in the red light district of Amsterdam for over 40 years.

The sisters freed themselves from the control of their pimps, ran their own brothel, and set up the first informal trade union for prostitutes. I especially love the surreal scene where the twins, both dressed in pink dancing outside their cubicle with a dog on a leash.

The documentary is set to begin its U.S. festival run at the upcoming SilverDocs Film Festival in mid-June. Directed by Gabrielle Provaas and Rob Schröder, Meet The Fokkens is slated for a theatrical premiere at New York’s Film Forum on August 8. It will expand to major markets in September and October.

Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the whole world has claimed the lives of four climbers in just two days. German National Eberhard Schaaf, 61, South Korean Song Won-Bin, 44, Chinese Ha Wenyi, 55 and Shriya Shah, 33, a Canadian who was actually born in Nepal, all died in their quest to reach the summit of Everest.

It is believed that the cause of death was altitude sickness and/or exhaustion, however mountaineering experts have warned that overcrowding is also to blame. This coming weekend hundreds more climbers are expected to take to the slopes to make the ascent and experts warn that yet more lives could be lost.

Because the weather window to climb Everest is only a few months long and the major increase in people attempting to make the climb, in recent years bottlenecking at Hilary Step has become a problem. Hilary Step is the rockface near the summit, where climbers have to ascend and descend with the assistance of ropes. When there are hundreds of climbers on the mountain, there is often a long wait to use the rope. One Sherpa told the Telegraph that often people have had to wait up to three hours and that this lack of movement can allow frostbite to set in. Another problem caused by the bottleneck is the amount of oxygen that is used up. The higher up that the climbers are, the more oxygen they will use.

On the evening of May 18th, roughly 300 climbers and their guides took to the slopes of Everest, in a bid to reach the coveted summit, the highest place in the entire world. It was over the course of this weekend that these four lives were lost and it is one of the deadliest ever, since people first started attempting to scale the gigantic mountain. Outside Online’s Grayson Schaffer was there that night, he said; “Everest appeared to be lit up like a Christmas tree with the headlamps of climbers converging from the mountain’s north and south sides.” If you want to read an insider’s account of what happened on the mountain over that fateful weekend, then Schaffer’s article is for you.

When I think ‘science fair’, images of clumsy paper mache mountains and washing-up liquid monstrosities immediately spring to mind, but entrees at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair are a little more complicated. This Fair is widely regarded as one of the biggest and the best around the world and the stakes are pretty high too. Winner Jack Andraka, 15, walked away with $75,000 in prize money for inventing a simple, non-invasive test for pancreatic cancer.

Andraka’s revolutionary test uses a dip-stick to examine blood and urine and has a 90% accuracy rate. According to the announcer who proclaimed Andraka’s test the winner, it is approximately 28 times cheaper and faster than the current technology used to test for the dangerous disease. It is also 100 times more sensitive.

Andraka said he was moved to develop such a test after pancreatic cancer claimed the lives of his uncle and a friend’s brother. He told the Washington Post that he had high hopes for his research, saying: “What I really want to do with this is get it into regular screenings, so that every single person can have it and make sure they’re safe…This can detect it before the cancer becomes invasive, so it can really help people survive.” Having also known several people who have lost their lives to pancreatic cancer, I really hope that Andraka’s test is introduced, and soon.

The runners-up at the fair also had some pretty impressive ideas, like Nicholas Schiefer, 17, who discovered a method of enabling search engines to parse Twitter and Facebook accounts and browse through small amounts of content, called ‘microsearch’… microsearch’ got Schiefer a $50,000 runners up prize money and could end up making him a hell of a lot more in the near future as social media is rapidly taking over the world! ‘

Another $50,000 winner, Ari Dyckovsky, 18, developed a new method of teleporting information through a process called ‘entanglement’. Hypervocal said of entanglement’; “Information from one atom will appear in another when the first atom’s quantum state is destroyed. This could help the National Security Administration send encrypted messages without fear of interception because data would simply appear at its destination.” Wow, impressive stuff!

40 teenage finalists took part in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, they were chosen from more than 1,500 young science whizz kids selected from hundreds of affiliate fairs across 70 different countries.

After the winners were announced the young scientists had a well-deserved party!

Check out these two news clips about the Tennessee man who holds the county record for having the most children! Yup, Desmond Hatchett, 33, has 30 kids by 11 different women and unfortunately for the mothers and the children – he can’t afford to pay for them.

According to the Tennessee laws, they can’t do anything to make Hatchett stop sowing his wild oats and they can only take 50% of his paycheck to pay the hundreds of dollars of child support that he owes.

Hatchett had a minimum wage job – it doesn’t take a mathematics whizz to figure out that the money the state takes off him – isn’t really going to stretch very far. In fact, the news reporter states that some women only end up receiving $1.98 a month once Hatchett’s measly check is divided up! I’m no expert on how much it costs to raise a child, having had none of my own, but even I can tell you that that just isn’t going to cut it!

Reports from The Smoking Gun suggest that Hatchett has been locked up in a state penitentiary for the last 33 months for failing to provide adequate child support for his children. He is basically one giant nightmare for the taxpayer!

In the video clip from 2009, Hatchett told the interviewer that he did not intend to have any more children, he has fathered a further 9 kids since then. He claimed that all 11 women that he has had children with knew all about his big family and went along with it.

Can someone get this guy a lifetime supply of condoms – and while you’re at it, maybe someone should arrange for his baby mamas to have their heads read too!

Buying and selling sheep in Canada might seem like a strange analogy to use when trying to explain some of the fundamental laws of physics, but somehow Minute Physics seems to make it happen. It has been a very long time since I’ve thought about physics, so when I saw this clip featured on Gizmodo, I decided to give it a go!

Whilst this short clip was much more interesting and informative than a lot of the physics lessons I had to sit through at school, unfortunately it did remind me how much I hated the subject. I found myself going into the same sort of glazed trance as I used to when I was teenager, longing for my science lessons to end and my art and English lessons to begin! Honestly I spent most of the clip watching him draw the pretty pictures rather than taking in any of the information!

However, in saying that, the Minute Physics clips are a really useful tool if delving into the physics laws and really trying to grasp them is on your agenda. His explanations are clear and concise and he uses examples that everyone (except me – it seems) can easily conceptualize.
