Former fashion model Ann Kirsten Kennis is suing Vampire Weekend for using a photo of her, taken in the ’80s, for the cover of their second album, Contra.
The photo was either sold or donated sometime after 1983, which was when it was taken. Not only is she suing the band, but she is also suing the record label as well as the photog who sold them the photo. The overall total she is suing all three parties for is $2 million.
Alan Neigher, Kennis’ lawyer, said that one day Ann’s daughter came home and said, “Hi mom, see your picture?”
Apparently the photographer claims he has had the photo in his possession and that he was the person who originally shot the photograph. He supposedly also forged Ann’s signature so that the band could use the photo.
The band says that they did not know the woman, just that they found the photo “striking”.
