The Golden Globes

The "Oscars" is the jocular term used to describe the award handed out by the Academy. The Academy Awards (The National Association of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) gives the Oscars.

The Golden Globes are handed out by the Foreign Press Corps. At one time seen as a joke, they are now a precursor as to where the Oscars may be landing

"Slumdog" won 8 awardsThe Academy Awards are handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (A.M.P.A.S). The trophy for winning an Academy Award is called an "Oscar". It is also the name of the Academy Awards ceremony.

The Golden Globes are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press.

The difference is the Academy is made up of people who actually make motion pictures where the Hollywood Foreign Press is reports. The Academy also has a membership of about 5000 while the HFP has a member ship of around 100 (? exact number).

Slumdog Millionaire: 8 Oscars (out of 11 nominations) and 4 Golden Globes. Plus numerous other awards.
