Oscar News

It turns out that Gran Torino is quite a smash hit at the box office.  Steve Mason at Big Hollywood is reporting that the film will open at number one this weekend, beating The Bride Wars.  It will become Eastwood’s highest ever opener in wide release (we remember how well Million Dollar Baby did in limited release):

ALL-TIME BEST CLINT EASTWOOD OPENINGS
- wide release –
1. Gran Torino – $30M (projected)
2. Space Cowboys – $18.09M
3. In the Line of Fire – $15.2M
4. Unforgiven – $15M
5. Absolute Power – $14.6M

Meanwhile, the NY Times has been talking up the Gran Torino numbers for a while now.  The Bagger also takes a look at the film’s popularity and the strong possibility of Eastwood snagging the Best Actor statue.

Clint in the race does make it a three-way. How the votes will split among the Academy remains to be seen.  One thing we know for sure going in, Clint Eastwood is an AMPAS God.  All of the actors like him, all of the directors like him, the public likes him.   And while Oscars shouldn’t necessarily be won on likability, we know it happens often – look at Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive – not a particularly challenging role but a likable one, and an extremely likable actor.
